Valerie Castile, the mother of Philando Castile, just gave $8,000 to clear all lunch debt for seniors at Robbinsdale Cooper High School in Minnesota.
Her son, Philando, once worked in a school cafeteria and quietly paid for kids’ meals, he believed no child should worry about food while trying to learn.
After his tragic death in 2016, Valerie set up a foundation to keep his caring spirit alive.
With debts reaching over $300,000 in the district, her gift lets 334 students graduate without the burden of leftover lunch bills.
Valerie says kids need meals to succeed, and parents shouldn’t have to stress about affording basic nutrition.
The foundation has helped thousands before, last year, it cleared lunch debts at every St. Paul school.
School leaders call this a true act of kindness for the community.
“My son’s mission was making sure kids were taken care of. I want to fulfill that promise,” Valerie says.
