The energy at Willky Williams event last week still got my mind running. I remember Wilk back in the Dickies and Jerry Curl era. Remember turning down our block and Wilk jumping in and asking my dad to help turn him in. I remember Wilk always looking out for me and telling me I was doing right and to stay on the right path.
I remember Wilk embracing me and telling me how proud of me he was. We wasn’t family but grew up close enough to know each other. Hearing that from him helped me keep my head up in the hood. The impact of the Ogs helping direct young men in the right way is necessary. For that Wilk I’m forever indebted.
I was also looking around at all the men still in shape wondering what it woulda been like if those same men was cops, sheriffs, firefighters, gym teachers, principals, coaches, business owners and construction workers working in our neighborhood.
Seeing the women nurturing the elders and kids wondering what it would be like if they were the nurses, doctors, teachers, rec staff, school admin, school board members, daycare providers or politicians working in our neighborhood.
Looking at all the old schools, cars and toys wondering what it would be like if the park in the neighborhood looked like that every Sunday. Families just out there kicking it with no beef or drama. The crazy part I saw men who shot at each other or even stabbed each other when they were younger and somehow found a reason to embrace. Understanding that the moment is bigger than the petty issues.
Damn I miss my old neighborhood… When men ran by a code. Sorry for the long post but thanks Wilk for all you have done for so many and being a stand up Man, Father and OG’S.
